And what is a social justice approach exactly?

Terry Osborn, University of South Florida

As more educators adopt critical and social justice approaches to language education, the need for common understanding of what constitutes such an approach is important.  Does it mean activities that focus on important social issues?  Perhaps it is dealing with vocabulary related to social and class struggle?  Would such an approach require activism outside the classroom or even the institution?  The speaker explores the various facets of such approaches and argues that it is a mindset, a critical consciousness, within such approaches that drives the classroom specifics.  Insights from teachers new to the approach will be included.
